For my critique of an online literary journal, I chose 2River, which seems to be an online only collection of literary ezines and poetry 'chapbooks', which are showcases of a specific author's poetry. The site has a very plain look, but it is also uncluttered and seems to work well for the material: helping to focus more on the literature than on the glitz and glam of the web page. The journal also includes various other works of art in each issue, from a wide variety of painters and illustrators.
Formally, the site is laid out very well, offering archives and current issues of both the chapbooks and the ezines. Also salient to the form of the journal is that within each ezine, current and archived, the submissions are organized by author, rather than simply assembled in to an arbitrary order with pages that have to be navigated through, you simply click an author and start reading. This ease of navigation also works well with the clean layout of the rest of the site. The appearance of the chapbooks is where 2River really shines however. They are gorgeous in their simplicity: with cover pages showcasing art and simple links to either web-navigate the text, download the poetry in PDF format, or to return to 2River.
Overall, I would say this is one of the better literary journal sites I've seen. Not only do they actually showcase the work of their contributors, in a free and open forum, they also always seem eager to accept submissions, from the links to contribute to either the ezine or the chapbook on their main page. I would definitely enjoy being published by 2River, they seem to have a very progressive attitude in respect to their publishing, and even offer the option on all of their ezines for a 'print, fold, and staple' version. Essentially, they seem to embody everything that I believe should be occuring industry-wide, with a move toward online publishing and freedom of use, and to top it all off, they have a "Podcasts & Commentary" section that seems to be updated quite frequently.
